1. Auditory hallucinations

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Hearing sounds or voices that others do not hear, without an external source. They are the most common hallucinations in schizophrenia and also occur in mood disorders with psychotic features, PTSD, substance use and some neurological conditions.

Example: Reports AH, two voices commenting on his actions, no command hallucinations; increase risperidone.

"Command" hallucinations, which tell the person to do something, are documented carefully because of safety implications. Some people hear voices without distress or illness, a view promoted by the Hearing Voices Movement. In gastroenterology AH means alcohol-associated hepatitis, an entirely different meaning.

2. Ampere-hour (Ah)

Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations

Charge capacity of one ampere flowing for one hour, the rating for car, marine, deep-cycle, e-bike and solar storage batteries. A typical car starter battery is about 45 to 70 Ah.

Example: Two 100 Ah lithium batteries give the RV about 2.5 kWh of usable storage.

Multiply Ah by voltage for watt-hours: a 12 V, 100 Ah battery stores about 1.2 kWh. Lead-acid batteries should not be routinely discharged below about half their capacity, while lithium iron phosphate tolerates much deeper discharge, so equal Ah ratings do not mean equal usable energy. Car batteries also carry a cold cranking amps (CCA) rating.

3. Alcohol-associated hepatitis

Medical · Gastroenterology Abbreviations

Acute inflammatory liver injury in heavy drinkers, presenting with recent-onset jaundice, often fever and tender hepatomegaly, and an AST usually about twice the ALT. Severe cases, flagged by a Maddrey discriminant function of 32 or more or a high MELD score, carry substantial short-term mortality.

Example: Severe AH, Maddrey 48, MELD 27; started prednisolone 40 mg daily, Lille score due on day 7.

Older texts say alcoholic hepatitis. The Lille model, calculated after seven days of corticosteroids, identifies non-responders in whom steroids should be stopped. In psychiatric notes AH instead means auditory hallucinations, so the term is best spelled out in shared records. Aminotransferases rarely exceed about 400 U/L in this condition.

4. Attack helicopter

Military · Weapon and Military Equipment Abbreviations

US mission designation for helicopters armed to attack ground targets, as in the AH-64 Apache used by the Army and the AH-1Z Viper used by the Marine Corps.

Example: Two AH-64s engaged the enemy vehicles with Hellfire missiles.

Attack helicopters have tandem cockpits with the pilot and gunner seated one behind the other. The AH-1 Cobra, introduced in Vietnam, was the first dedicated US attack helicopter. AH is also a common interjection.

5. Anno Hegirae (in the year of the Hijra)

Religion · Religious Term Abbreviations

Label for years in the Islamic lunar calendar, counted from the Hijra, the Prophet Muhammad's migration from Mecca to Medina in AD 622. The Hijri calendar is used to fix Ramadan, the hajj and other religious dates.

Example: The manuscript is dated 1201 AH, roughly AD 1786.

Because a lunar year has about 354 days, Hijri years advance about three years per century faster than Gregorian ones, so dates cannot be converted by simple subtraction. The second caliph, Umar, introduced the era around AD 638. Iran and Afghanistan also use a solar Hijri calendar, abbreviated SH.
