1. Bar

Units & Measurements · Engineering Unit Abbreviations

A metric pressure unit of 100,000 pascals, almost exactly standard atmospheric pressure. Tire gauges, espresso machines, scuba gear, pumps and pressure washers outside the US commonly use bar.

Example: Espresso machines extract at about 9 bar of brewing pressure.

The name comes from Greek baros, weight. The bar is not an SI unit but is widely accepted in European engineering. One bar is about 14.5 psi, and 1 atmosphere equals 1.01325 bar. Diving cylinders are filled to 200 or 300 bar, and water depth adds about 1 bar every 10 meters. Notation such as bar(g) and bar(a) separates gauge from absolute pressure.

2. Baruch (Bar.)

Religion · Bible Book Abbreviations

Deuterocanonical book attributed to Baruch, the scribe of the prophet Jeremiah, combining prayers of confession, a wisdom poem and words of comfort for exiles. Catholic Bibles include the Letter of Jeremiah as its sixth chapter.

Example: The poem praising Wisdom in Bar. 3 is read at the Easter Vigil.

SBL writes Bar, and Catholic Bibles use Bar as well; the Letter of Jeremiah is abbreviated Ep Jer or Let Jer. Context distinguishes Bar. from bar as in legal profession or unit of pressure. Several other ancient works, such as 2 Baruch, also bear his name.
