Deut. stands for Deuteronomy, a Bible book abbreviation.
Fifth and final book of the Torah, 34 chapters, presented as Moses' farewell speeches to Israel before entering Canaan and ending with his death on Mount Nebo. It contains the Shema, "Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord" (6:4).
Example: Jesus quoted Deut. 8:3, "man doth not live by bread only," when tempted in the wilderness.
Usage notes
SBL writes Deut, and short forms use Dt. The English name comes from Greek for "second law", reflecting its restatement of earlier commandments. The Shema is recited twice daily in Jewish prayer and written in mezuzahs and tefillin.
