Eccl. stands for Ecclesiastes, a Bible book abbreviation.
Wisdom book of 12 chapters in which the Teacher (Hebrew Qoheleth) reflects on the brevity and apparent meaninglessness of life, opening with "Vanity of vanities; all is vanity." Chapter 3's "To every thing there is a season" inspired the song "Turn! Turn! Turn!".
Example: "There is no new thing under the sun" comes from Eccl. 1:9.
Usage notes
SBL accepts Eccl or Qoh, Chicago's traditional list uses Eccles., and short forms use Eccl. Jewish tradition attributes it to Solomon in his old age. Do not confuse it with Ecclesiasticus (Sirach), a deuterocanonical book abbreviated Sir. or Ecclus.
