VDR stands for Voyage data recorder, a maritime abbreviation.
Ship's equivalent of an aircraft black box, recording bridge audio, radio communications, radar images, position, speed, heading and alarms. Investigators use VDR data to reconstruct maritime accidents.
Example: Investigators recovered the VDR from the bridge of the cargo ship that struck the bridge.
Usage notes
Required under SOLAS on passenger ships and on cargo ships of 3,000 gross tonnage and above built since 2002. A simplified version (S-VDR) applies to some older ships. Data from the Costa Concordia's VDR was key evidence after its 2012 grounding.
