RHIB stands for Rigid-hulled inflatable boat, a maritime abbreviation.
Fast, seaworthy boat with a solid fiberglass or aluminum hull and inflatable tubes around the sides, used by lifeboat services, navies, coast guards and dive operators. Also written RIB.
Example: The coast guard launched a RHIB to intercept the drifting yacht.
Usage notes
Development in the 1960s at Atlantic College in Wales led to the modern RIB, later adopted by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Militaries use RHIBs for boarding operations. The inflatable collar provides buoyancy and stability even when swamped.
