SART stands for Search and rescue transponder, a maritime abbreviation.

Portable device carried in lifeboats and on ships that responds to rescue radar signals, creating a line of 12 dots on the searcher's radar screen pointing to the survivors' location. AIS-SART versions show up on AIS displays instead.

Example: The crew switched on the SART in the life raft so the searching ship's radar could find them.

Usage notes

Part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System. Radar SARTs respond to 9 GHz (X-band) radar. Ships must carry them in numbers set by SOLAS, depending on size.
