1. Generalized tonic-clonic seizure

Medical · Neurology Abbreviations

Seizure involving both sides of the brain, with a stiffening (tonic) phase followed by rhythmic jerking (clonic) of all limbs, loss of consciousness, and often tongue biting and incontinence. Confusion and sleepiness afterward (the postictal state) can last minutes to hours.

Example: First GTC at age 19 after sleep deprivation; EEG shows generalized spike-wave discharges.

Previously called "grand mal" seizures, a term the International League Against Epilepsy no longer uses. Under the 2017 ILAE classification, a seizure that starts in one area and spreads is called focal to bilateral tonic-clonic. Uncontrolled GTC seizures are the strongest risk factor for SUDEP. Bystanders should time the seizure, turn the person on their side and not put anything in the mouth.

2. Good 'til canceled

Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations

Order instruction that keeps a buy or sell order active until it is filled or the investor cancels it, rather than expiring at the end of the trading day. Most US brokers cap GTC orders at somewhere between 60 and 180 days.

Example: I placed a GTC limit order to buy at $42, well below today's price.

Also written good-till-canceled. Because GTC orders stay open for weeks, they can fill unexpectedly after an overnight price gap. The default alternative is a day order, which expires at the close if it is not filled.
