HIE stands for Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, a neurology abbreviation.
Brain injury caused by inadequate oxygen and blood flow, seen in newborns after birth asphyxia and in adults after cardiac arrest, drowning or strangulation. In term newborns it causes altered consciousness, abnormal tone and seizures in the first days of life.
Example: Apgars 1 and 3, cord pH 6.9, encephalopathic: moderate HIE, cooling started at 4 hours of life.
Usage notes
Therapeutic hypothermia, cooling the baby to 33.5 degrees Celsius for 72 hours starting within six hours of birth, reduces death and disability in moderate to severe neonatal HIE. The Sarnat staging system grades newborn encephalopathy as mild, moderate or severe. In adults after cardiac arrest, the term anoxic brain injury is often used instead.
