1. International Olympic Committee
Sports · Sports League and Organization Abbreviations
Organization that governs the Olympic movement and awards the Summer, Winter and Youth Olympic Games to host cities. It owns the rights to the Games and the Olympic rings, recognizes national Olympic committees and international federations, and shares broadcast revenue with them.
Example: The IOC awarded the 2032 Summer Games to Brisbane in July 2021.
Founded by Pierre de Coubertin and Demetrios Vikelas in Paris on June 23, 1894, and based in Lausanne, Switzerland, since 1915. The first modern Games followed in Athens in 1896. Members are individuals rather than national delegates. Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe became the first woman and first African elected IOC president in 2025.
2. Indicator of compromise (IoC)
Technology & Computing · Cybersecurity Abbreviations
A piece of forensic evidence suggesting a system has been breached, such as a malicious file hash, IP address, domain, registry key or unusual network pattern. Security teams share IoCs so others can detect the same attack.
Example: Load the vendor's IoC list into the SIEM and search the last 90 days of logs for matches.
IoCs travel through threat-intelligence feeds using standards such as STIX and TAXII. Because attackers change infrastructure cheaply, indicators go stale quickly; the "pyramid of pain" model argues that detecting behavior hurts attackers more. In software design IoC means inversion of control, an unrelated meaning.
3. Inversion of control (IoC)
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A design principle in which a framework calls the developer's code rather than the developer's code calling the framework, for example through callbacks, event handlers or dependency injection. It is summed up as the "Hollywood principle": don't call us, we'll call you.
Example: Spring's IoC container creates the beans and wires them together at startup.
Discussed in object-oriented design literature from the late 1980s, it is the defining trait of a framework as opposed to a library. In Java and .NET circles "IoC container" means a dependency injection container. In cybersecurity IoC means indicator of compromise, such as a malicious IP address or file hash; containers and frameworks point to the programming meaning.
4. Immediate or cancel
Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations
Order instruction requiring that any portion of an order that can be filled immediately is executed and the remainder canceled at once. Institutional and algorithmic traders use it to avoid leaving orders resting on the book.
Example: The algorithm sent IOC orders to six venues to sweep available liquidity at $18.40.
Unlike fill or kill (FOK), an IOC order accepts partial fills. IOC orders are a building block of "intermarket sweep orders" in US equity markets. Long-term individual investors rarely need them.
