LCD panel technology in which liquid crystals rotate parallel to the screen, giving wide viewing angles of up to 178 degrees and accurate, consistent colors. It is common in professional monitors, laptops, iPads and many TVs.

Example: For photo editing, choose an IPS monitor with good sRGB coverage.

Hitachi developed IPS in 1996, and LG Display became its largest maker. Its contrast ratio is usually around 1,000:1, lower than VA panels, and a faint "IPS glow" may show in dark corners. Fast IPS panels now rival TN for gaming response times. In cybersecurity, IPS means intrusion prevention system.

2. Intrusion prevention system

A security system placed inline with network traffic that detects attacks and actively blocks them, for example by dropping malicious packets or resetting connections. Modern firewalls usually include IPS features.

Example: The IPS dropped the exploit attempts against the unpatched web server.

Because it sits inline, a misconfigured IPS can block legitimate traffic, so new rules are often tested in detect-only mode first. Virtual patching, blocking exploitation of a known flaw until the real patch is applied, is a common use. In monitors and TVs IPS means in-plane switching, an LCD panel technology; network context points to this meaning.
