1. Forward

Writing & Everyday · Email and Office Abbreviations

Appears as a prefix (Fwd:) on the subject line of an email that has been forwarded, meaning resent to new recipients along with the original message. Email clients add it automatically.

Example: Fwd: Updated travel itinerary for the Denver conference, please review before Monday

Gmail and Apple Mail use "Fwd:," while Microsoft Outlook uses "FW:"; both mean the same thing. Messages forwarded many times pile up prefixes ("Fwd: Fwd: Fwd:"), a hallmark of chain emails. In casual writing, "fwd" also works as a verb, as in "I'll fwd you the link." Unlike Re:, the prefix is not defined in the core email standards.

2. Front-wheel drive (FWD)

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Layout in which the engine powers only the front wheels, usually with the engine mounted sideways (transverse). Most compact and midsize passenger cars use FWD because it is cheap, space-efficient and gives good traction with the engine's weight over the driven wheels.

Example: Even with FWD and good snow tires, the hatchback climbed the icy hill without trouble.

The 1959 Mini, designed by Alec Issigonis, popularized the transverse-engine front-drive layout used by most cars today. Powerful FWD cars can suffer torque steer, a tug on the steering wheel under hard acceleration. FWD cars tend toward understeer, pushing wide in corners, which is considered easier for ordinary drivers to control.
