EVAP stands for Evaporative emission control system, an automotive abbreviation.
System that traps gasoline vapors from the fuel tank in a charcoal canister and later burns them in the engine, preventing them from escaping into the air. Leaks in the system are a common cause of check engine lights.
Example: The EVAP small-leak code came back, so the mechanic smoke-tested the system.
Usage notes
US regulations require on-board leak detection capable of finding very small holes. Common EVAP codes include P0455 (large leak) and P0456 (very small leak). Overfilling the tank after the pump clicks off can flood the charcoal canister with liquid fuel and damage it.
