EFI stands for Electronic fuel injection, an automotive abbreviation.
Fuel system in which a computer controls injectors that spray precisely metered fuel into the engine, replacing the carburetor. EFI improves fuel economy, cold starts and emissions control, and became universal on US cars by the early 1990s.
Example: Swapping the old carburetor for an EFI kit cured the hard starts on my classic truck.
Usage notes
Bosch's D-Jetronic system on the Volkswagen 1600 in the late 1960s was one of the first mass-produced electronic injection systems. Early EFI used throttle-body injection, a single injector above the throttle, before multiport and direct injection took over. Aftermarket EFI conversions are popular with classic car owners.
