ECU stands for Engine control unit, an automotive abbreviation.
Onboard computer that manages an engine's fuel injection, ignition timing, idle speed, variable valve timing and emissions systems using data from dozens of sensors. "Tuning" a car usually means reprogramming the ECU.
Example: After the ECU flash, the turbo four gained about 40 horsepower and sharper throttle response.
Usage notes
ECU is also used generically for "electronic control unit," any of the dozens of computers in a modern car; premium models can have more than 100. Manufacturers use their own names for engine computers, such as ECM or PCM. Unauthorized ECU tuning can void warranties and break emissions laws.
