DSG stands for Direct-shift gearbox, an automotive abbreviation.
Volkswagen Group's name for its dual-clutch transmission, used in Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda cars. DSG gearboxes come in six- and seven-speed versions with wet or dry clutches.
Example: The DSG needs a fluid change every 40,000 miles according to the service schedule.
Usage notes
From the German Direktschaltgetriebe. Introduced in 2003 on the Golf R32 and Audi TT, it made dual-clutch technology mainstream. Audi markets the same technology as S tronic. Some early seven-speed dry-clutch DSGs had reliability problems that led to extended warranties in several countries.
