1. Direct-to-consumer

Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations

Business model in which a brand sells to end customers through its own website, app or stores, bypassing wholesalers and retailers, which gives it control of pricing, data and the customer relationship. The term is the most common US form.

Example: After a decade of wholesale, the mattress maker is pushing hard into DTC.

A wave of digitally native DTC brands in the 2010s, such as Warby Parker, Dollar Shave Club and Casper, built businesses on social media advertising; rising ad costs later pushed many back into retail partnerships. In pharmaceuticals, DTC advertising of prescription drugs to consumers is legal only in the United States and New Zealand.

2. Diagnostic trouble code

Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations

Five-character fault code stored by a vehicle's computer when it detects a problem, such as P0420 (catalytic converter efficiency below threshold) or P0300 (random misfire). Mechanics and parts stores read DTCs with a scan tool.

Example: The scanner pulled DTC P0171, system too lean, so I'm checking for a vacuum leak first.

The first letter shows the system: P for powertrain, B for body, C for chassis and U for network communication. A 0 as the second character marks a generic code defined by SAE, while a 1 marks a manufacturer-specific code. A code identifies a symptom rather than a failed part, so diagnosis is still needed.

3. Direct-to-consumer advertising

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Marketing of prescription drugs directly to the public through television, print, online and social media ads. The United States and New Zealand are the only high-income countries that allow it broadly.

Example: DTC spending on the new psoriasis biologic topped the industry chart this year.

The FDA's 1997 draft guidance on broadcast ads led to a rapid rise in TV drug commercials, which must include a "major statement" of risks. Ads are regulated by the FDA's Office of Prescription Drug Promotion. DTC also describes companies that sell directly to consumers in other industries.
