DRL stands for Daytime running lights, an automotive abbreviation.
Low-intensity front lights that switch on automatically whenever the vehicle is running, making it more visible to other road users during the day. DRLs are often LED strips that also serve as a design signature.
Example: The DRL is on, but your taillights aren't, so switch the headlights on in this fog.
Usage notes
Canada required DRLs on new vehicles from 1990, and the EU from 2011; the US permits but does not require them. A common mistake is driving at dusk with only DRLs lit, leaving the rear of the car dark. Scandinavian countries pioneered daytime running lights because of long winter twilight.
