LDW stands for Lane departure warning, an automotive abbreviation.
Alert, such as a chime, a light or a steering-wheel vibration, that warns a driver when the car drifts out of its lane without a turn signal. LDW warns but does not steer, unlike lane keeping assist.
Example: LDW buzzed the seat every time I clipped the rumble strip on the two-lane road.
Usage notes
Early systems appeared on trucks in the 1990s and on passenger cars in the 2000s. IIHS research found lane departure warning reduced single-vehicle, sideswipe and head-on crashes. Many drivers turn it off because of frequent alerts on narrow roads.
