1. Lieutenant (US Navy and Coast Guard)
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rank Abbreviations
Sea-service officer rank at pay grade O-3 in the Navy and Coast Guard, worn as two silver bars or two gold sleeve stripes, equal to a captain in the Army, Air Force and Marine Corps. Lieutenants serve as division officers, department heads on smaller ships, aviators and staff officers.
Example: LT Moreno, the helicopter aircraft commander, will brief the crew at 0600.
Because Army and Marine personnel use "LT" informally for any first or second lieutenant, a Navy LT is noticeably more senior than the "LT" in Army usage. Pronounced "lieutenant" in full in speech. In the Royal Navy, a lieutenant is likewise NATO OF-2, a grade above a British Army lieutenant.
2. Lithuania
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Lithuania, capital Vilnius, alpha-3 LTU, was the first Soviet republic to declare independence, on March 11, 1990. It joined the EU and NATO in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2015.
Example: Lithuanian IBANs begin with LT and contain 20 characters.
LT, LV and LU are easily confused: Lithuania, Latvia and Luxembourg. LT also abbreviates lieutenant (Lt.) and light truck tires.
3. Local time
Units & Measurements · Time Zone Abbreviations
Clock time at a particular place, including its zone offset and any daylight saving. Aviation, shipping and military documents write LT to distinguish local time from UTC or Zulu.
Example: Departure 0745 LT, arrival 1210 LT; all other times in this briefing are UTC.
Airline timetables show departures and arrivals in local time at each airport, which is why an eastbound flight across the International Date Line can appear to land before it took off. In the military letter system, local time is the J or Juliet zone. Mission reports often list LT and UTC side by side.
4. Light truck
Transportation & Travel · Automotive Abbreviations
Tire designation for heavy-duty tires built for pickups, vans and SUVs that carry heavy loads or tow, marked with "LT" before the size, as in LT265/70R17. LT tires have stiffer sidewalls and higher load ranges than passenger tires.
Example: Switching to LT tires made the ride harsher but stopped the trailer from swaying.
Passenger tires are marked with a P (P-metric) or nothing. Load range letters such as C, D and E indicate the tire's strength and maximum pressure. LT tires typically run at higher pressures, often 65 to 80 psi when loaded.
5. Left tackle
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Offensive tackle on the left end of the line, guarding a right-handed quarterback's blind side against speed rushers. Top left tackles are among the highest-paid linemen in the NFL.
Example: The team signed a veteran LT after its starter tore an ACL in training camp.
The right tackle (RT), left guard (LG) and right guard (RG) are labeled the same way on depth charts. For a left-handed quarterback the blind side is the right, so the right tackle takes on that role. In military usage LT is the abbreviation for lieutenant.
