LTJG stands for Lieutenant Junior Grade, a US Navy and coast guard rank abbreviation.

Navy and Coast Guard officer rank at pay grade O-2, shown by a single silver bar or one wide and one narrow gold sleeve stripe. Most LTJGs are division officers on ships, students or junior pilots, or junior officers on Coast Guard cutters.

Example: LTJG Park, the communications officer, will brief the message traffic at 0800.

Usage notes

Pronounced "lieutenant j-g." The grade equals an Army, Air Force or Marine first lieutenant. Navy style writes LTJG without spaces or punctuation; older texts and AP style use Lt. j.g. Promotion to lieutenant usually comes after two years in grade.
