1. Left ventricle

Medical · Cardiology Abbreviations

Thick-walled lower chamber on the left side of the heart that pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta and to the entire body. Its size, wall thickness and contraction are the core measurements of almost every echocardiogram report.

Example: LV size normal, LV wall thickness mildly increased, LV systolic function low normal.

The left ventricular wall is normally about 6 to 11 mm thick, roughly three times thicker than the right, because it pumps against much higher pressure. Derived terms include LVEF, LVH, LVOT and LVAD. The American Heart Association's 17-segment model divides it into regions supplied by specific coronary arteries.

2. Las Vegas

Geography & Places · City and Neighborhood Abbreviations

Nevada's largest city and the gambling and entertainment capital of the United States, founded in 1905 as a railroad town. Most of the famous Strip actually lies outside city limits in the unincorporated town of Paradise.

Example: The LV convention center hosts the giant electronics show every January.

Vegas is the more common short form in speech, and Sin City a popular nickname. LV is also the ISO code for Latvia and the monogram of Louis Vuitton. The airport code is LAS.

3. Latvia

Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations

Latvia, capital Riga, alpha-3 LVA, regained independence in 1991, joined the EU and NATO in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2014. Riga's old town has one of Europe's largest collections of Art Nouveau buildings.

Example: Latvian IBANs start with LV and contain 21 characters.

LV is also the monogram of Louis Vuitton and a common short form for Las Vegas, and Latvia is often confused with Lithuania (LT). The IOC uses LAT.

4. Likely voters

Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations

Poll subgroup made up of respondents judged likely to vote, based on screening questions about past voting, interest and intention. News reports label results "LV" to distinguish them from registered-voter or all-adult samples.

Example: The survey of 1,200 LV shows the race within the margin of error.

Pollsters use different likely-voter models, which can explain why surveys taken at the same time produce different results. Likely-voter samples are generally considered more predictive close to Election Day, while earlier polls often use registered voters. Outside politics LV is the abbreviation for Las Vegas and the Louis Vuitton monogram.

5. Livermorium (Lv)

Science & Engineering · Chemical Element Abbreviations

Livermorium (atomic number 116) is a superheavy element in group 16, below polonium, made by fusing curium-248 with calcium-48 ions. Each atom decays within a fraction of a second, so it is known only through the decay chains it leaves in detectors.

Example: Dubna's team reported its first Lv decay chain in 2000.

The Dubna-Livermore collaboration first observed the element in 2000. Its name, approved in 2012, honors Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and the city of Livermore, California, where it stands; the lab itself is named for Ernest Lawrence, who is also honored by lawrencium. The earlier placeholder was ununhexium (Uuh).
