1. Lichen sclerosus
Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations
Chronic inflammatory condition that causes thin, white, crinkled patches, itching and scarring, most often in the genital and anal skin of postmenopausal women and prepubertal girls, and less often in men. Untreated, it can change genital anatomy.
Example: Vulvar LS with itching and fissures; clobetasol 0.05 percent nightly for 4 weeks then taper.
Ultrapotent topical steroids control symptoms and reduce scarring. Long-term follow-up is advised because of a small increased risk of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma. In boys and men it can cause narrowing of the foreskin and is a common reason for circumcision. Formerly called lichen sclerosus et atrophicus.
2. Locus sigilli (place of the seal) (L.S.)
Law & Legal · Latin Legal Abbreviations
Printed beside the signature lines of deeds, bonds and older contracts to mark where a seal would be affixed. Its presence can make the document an instrument under seal, which historically needed no consideration and in some states still has a longer limitations period.
Example: Each guarantor signed on the line marked (L.S.) at the foot of the bond.
Many states have abolished the legal distinction between sealed and unsealed instruments, but some, such as Delaware and Maryland, still give instruments under seal a longer limitations period. Modern forms often print "[SEAL]" instead. Adding L.S. after a signature does not by itself create a sealed instrument everywhere; state law controls.
3. Logistics Specialist
Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations
Supply sailors who order, receive, store and issue parts and material, manage inventories and financial records, and run shipboard post offices. They keep a ship or squadron stocked during deployments.
Example: LS2 Okoye tracked down the replacement pump part in Bahrain within 24 hours.
The rating was created in 2009 by merging Storekeeper (SK) and Postal Clerk (PC); the Coast Guard still uses the Storekeeper title. Logistics specialists on submarines are designated LSS. LS is also the Unix command that lists files, an unrelated technology meaning.
4. Long snapper
Sports · American Football Abbreviations
Specialist who snaps the ball about seven yards to the holder on field goals and about 15 yards to the punter on punts. Fast, accurate snaps are critical, so NFL teams almost always carry one dedicated long snapper.
Example: The LS signed a five-year extension, rare job security for a specialist.
A single bad snap can lose a game, which is why teams do not rely on the starting center for kicks. Long snappers often play a decade or more because the role is less physically punishing; Patrick Mannelly snapped for the Bears for 16 seasons. Many enter the league undrafted.
5. Lesotho
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Mountain kingdom entirely surrounded by South Africa, with Maseru as its capital and LSO as its alpha-3 code. Its lowest point, about 1,400 metres above sea level, is the highest low point of any country.
Example: Water from LS is piped to Johannesburg under the Lesotho Highlands Water Project.
Basotho blankets and conical hats are national symbols. The loti is pegged to the South African rand, which also circulates.
