1. Merkel cell carcinoma
Medical · Dermatology Abbreviations
Rare, aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer that appears as a fast-growing, painless, red or violet nodule, usually on sun-exposed skin of older or immunosuppressed adults. It frequently spreads to lymph nodes and is treated with surgery, radiation and immunotherapy.
Example: Rapidly enlarging violaceous nodule on cheek: MCC, CK20 positive; PET-CT and sentinel node biopsy.
Most cases are caused by Merkel cell polyomavirus, discovered in 2008, while others result from UV damage. Clinical clues are summarized as AEIOU: asymptomatic, expanding rapidly, immune suppression, older than 50 and UV-exposed site. Avelumab became the first FDA-approved drug for metastatic MCC in 2017.
2. Motorcycle crash
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Trauma mechanism involving a motorcycle, recorded with details such as helmet use, speed and whether the rider was thrown. Riders face far higher injury and death rates than car occupants.
Example: Unhelmeted MCC at highway speed, GCS 7, open tib-fib fracture.
Also written MCA (motorcycle accident). Helmet use substantially reduces the risk of death and head injury, and helmet laws vary by US state. In medical billing MCC means major complication or comorbidity, a coding term.
3. Mobile country code
Technology & Computing · Telecom Abbreviations
Three-digit code identifying the country of a mobile network, combined with a mobile network code (MNC) to identify each operator worldwide. It forms the start of every SIM's IMSI.
Example: The network info app shows MCC 234 and MNC 15, which means Vodafone UK.
The ITU assigns MCCs in Recommendation E.212; examples include 310 to 316 for the United States, 234 and 235 for the United Kingdom and 460 for China. Together, the MCC and MNC form the PLMN identity that phones use to choose and display networks while roaming. They differ from international dialing codes, such as +1 or +44.
