HHV stands for Higher heating value, an energy abbreviation.
Total heat released when a fuel burns completely, including the heat recovered by condensing the water vapor in the exhaust. The lower heating value (LHV) excludes that latent heat; for natural gas, HHV is about 10% higher than LHV.
Example: Condensing boilers capture part of the difference between HHV and LHV by cooling flue gases below their dew point.
Usage notes
North American practice usually states fuel energy and boiler efficiency on an HHV basis, while European practice often uses LHV, which is why European condensing boiler efficiencies can exceed 100%. Engineers must check the basis before comparing efficiency figures.
