HVO stands for Hydrotreated vegetable oil, an energy abbreviation.
Renewable diesel made by reacting vegetable oils, used cooking oil or animal fats with hydrogen, producing a fuel chemically similar to fossil diesel. HVO can be used in diesel engines unblended, often sold as HVO100, without modifications.
Example: The construction firm switched its generators to HVO to cut site emissions by up to 90%.
Usage notes
Unlike traditional biodiesel (FAME), HVO has no oxygen in its molecules, so it stores well and performs in cold weather. Finnish company Neste is a leading producer. Its climate benefit depends on feedstock; demand for waste oils has raised concerns about fraudulent "used" cooking oil imports.
