LFP stands for Lithium iron phosphate, an energy abbreviation.
Lithium-ion battery chemistry with a cathode of LiFePO4, valued for safety, long cycle life and low cost because it uses no nickel or cobalt. LFP batteries store somewhat less energy per kilogram than nickel-based cells and now power many standard-range EVs and most grid storage.
Example: The standard-range model switched to LFP cells, so the owner's manual recommends charging to 100% regularly.
Usage notes
Akshaya Padhi, John Goodenough and colleagues reported the material in 1997, and Chinese makers such as CATL and BYD drove its comeback in the 2020s with designs like BYD's Blade battery. LFP cells have a nominal voltage of about 3.2 volts. By 2024 they made up close to half of the global EV battery market.
