LPG stands for Liquefied petroleum gas, an energy abbreviation.
Fuel made mainly of propane and butane, which liquefy under modest pressure and are stored in steel cylinders and tanks. LPG fuels barbecues, home heating and cooking where there is no gas main, forklifts and "autogas" vehicles.
Example: The camper's LPG tank powers the stove, fridge and water heater.
Usage notes
LPG is recovered from natural gas processing and oil refining. A smelly odorant, usually ethyl mercaptan, is added so leaks can be detected. Because the vapor is heavier than air, leaks collect in low spaces such as basements and boat bilges. In the United States propane is the usual everyday name.
