BWC stands for Body-worn camera, a police abbreviation.
Small video camera worn on an officer's uniform to record encounters with the public. Body cameras spread rapidly in the US after the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
Example: The BWC footage showed the suspect reaching into his waistband before the officer fired.
Usage notes
Policies differ on when officers must activate cameras and when footage is released to the public. Studies show mixed results on whether cameras reduce use of force or complaints. Axon, maker of the TASER, is the largest supplier. Some states require release of footage within set time frames after critical incidents.
