FIP stands for Fielding independent pitching, a baseball abbreviation.

ERA-style metric based only on outcomes a pitcher controls: strikeouts, walks, hit batters and home runs. It is scaled so league-average FIP matches league-average ERA.

Example: A 2.85 FIP suggests his 4.10 ERA was driven by poor defense and bad luck.

Usage notes

Developed by Tom Tango from Voros McCracken's defense-independent pitching research. xFIP replaces actual home runs with a league-average rate on fly balls. Large gaps between ERA and FIP often close over the following season.
