1. East
Geography & Places · Direction Abbreviations
Cardinal direction where the sun rises, at 90 degrees. As an address directional E shows the part of a street east of the baseline, as in 210 E 42nd St in Manhattan, where Fifth Avenue divides east from west.
Example: The clinic moved to 150 E Main St, across from the courthouse.
The word orient, from Latin oriens, rising, originally meant the east. E also means energy in physics and is a common grade, vitamin and music note.
2. Error
Sports · Baseball Abbreviations
Misplay by a fielder, judged by the official scorer, that lets a batter reach base or a runner advance when ordinary effort would have made the play. In the linescore E shows each team's errors.
Example: The shortstop's E on a routine grounder opened the door to a four-run inning.
Errors are recorded by position number, so "E6" is an error by the shortstop. Runs that score because of errors are unearned. Critics argue errors punish fielders who reach more balls, which led to range-based metrics such as DRS and OAA.
3. Everyone
Arts & Entertainment · Video Game Abbreviations
ESRB rating meaning the content is generally suitable for all ages, with at most minimal cartoon, fantasy or mild violence and infrequent mild language.
Example: Mario Kart is rated E, so the whole family can play.
Called K-A (Kids to Adults) until 1998. An Early Childhood (EC) rating existed until 2018, when it was retired as little-used. E is the most common ESRB rating for retail games.
4. Exa- (quintillion)
Units & Measurements · Metric and SI Unit Abbreviations
A factor of 10^18, a million trillion. Exa- measures exabytes of internet traffic and storage, exajoules of global energy use and exaflops of supercomputer speed.
Example: Global primary energy consumption now runs at roughly 600 EJ per year.
Adopted in 1975; the name derives from Greek hex, six, since 10^18 is 1000^6. The Frontier system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory became the first publicly confirmed exascale supercomputer in 2022. Capital E is required, because a lowercase e is not an SI prefix and on calculators marks scientific notation, as in 3e18.
