1. Good night
Texting & Internet Slang · Texting and Chat Abbreviations
Bedtime farewell in texts and chats, often between friends, family or partners, and frequently followed by emojis, a heart or "sweet dreams."
Example: Gn, big day tomorrow, love you lots and sleep well.
Often paired with SD (sweet dreams), as in "gn sd." Longer forms include "gnight" and "nighty night." In gaming voice and text chat, players say "gn" to teammates leaving a late session. Warm in tone and fine in any casual setting.
2. Glomerulonephritis
Medical · Nephrology & Urology Abbreviations
Group of diseases that inflame the glomeruli, the kidney's filtering units, causing blood and protein in the urine, high blood pressure and declining function. Causes include IgA nephropathy, lupus, ANCA vasculitis, anti-GBM disease and post-infectious immune complexes; diagnosis usually requires kidney biopsy.
Example: Hematuria with RBC casts, creatinine doubling in two weeks: rapidly progressive GN, start pulse steroids.
Nephritic syndrome (hematuria, hypertension, kidney dysfunction) is the typical GN presentation, while nephrotic syndrome features heavy protein loss. Rapidly progressive GN, with crescents on biopsy, is a medical emergency. Red blood cell casts in urine strongly suggest glomerular bleeding. Post-streptococcal GN is the classic childhood form.
3. Graduate nurse
Medical · Healthcare Credential Abbreviations
Title for someone who has completed a nursing program but has not yet passed the NCLEX licensing exam. Some states issue temporary permits that allow graduate nurses to work under supervision until they receive their results.
Example: Orientation schedule for GN hires begins Monday; NCLEX must be passed within 90 days.
Rules vary widely by state, and some states do not allow graduate nurses to practice before licensure. Hospitals often enroll new graduates in nurse residency programs lasting 6 to 12 months. In nephrology GN means glomerulonephritis.
4. Grid north
Geography & Places · Direction Abbreviations
Direction of the vertical grid lines on a map projection such as UTM or the British National Grid, which differs slightly from true north except along the projection's central meridian.
Example: On the Ordnance Survey map, GN and TN differ by less than a degree here.
Walkers using grid references with a compass must allow for the difference between grid north and magnetic north, known in Britain as the grid magnetic angle.
5. Guinea
Geography & Places · Country Code Abbreviations
Guinea, with Conakry as its capital, has some of the world's largest bauxite reserves. It is sometimes called Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from Guinea-Bissau and Equatorial Guinea.
Example: Bauxite shipments from GN supply aluminum smelters in China.
The language code gn is Guarani, spoken in Paraguay. The alpha-3 code is GIN.
