FSGS stands for Focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, a nephrology & urology abbreviation.
Kidney biopsy pattern in which scarring affects some glomeruli (focal) and only part of each affected glomerulus (segmental). It is a leading cause of nephrotic syndrome in adults and of kidney failure from glomerular disease, and can be primary, genetic or secondary to obesity, viruses or reduced kidney mass.
Example: Biopsy: FSGS, tip variant, with diffuse foot process effacement; trial of high-dose prednisone.
Usage notes
FSGS is especially common in people of recent African ancestry carrying two high-risk APOL1 gene variants. Primary FSGS can recur rapidly after kidney transplant. The Columbia classification describes five variants, of which the collapsing type has the worst prognosis. Pronounced as letters.
