1. East-northeast
Geography & Places · Direction Abbreviations
Sitting at 67.5 degrees, between east and northeast, ENE is one of the 16 compass points. Forecasts use it for wind direction, which always describes where the wind comes from.
Example: The hurricane is moving ENE at 12 mph and is expected to stay offshore.
Storm motion is the reverse convention: it gives where the storm is heading. An ENE wind blows toward the west-southwest, while a storm moving ENE travels toward the east-northeast.
2. Early neutral evaluation
Law & Legal · Litigation Abbreviations
ADR process in which an experienced neutral, usually a lawyer with expertise in the subject, hears a confidential summary of each side's case early in the litigation and gives a frank, nonbinding assessment of strengths, weaknesses and likely value.
Example: The parties were referred to ENE with a patent litigator as evaluator before claim construction.
The Northern District of California pioneered ENE in the mid-1980s as part of its court-annexed ADR program. Unlike a mediator, the evaluator offers an opinion on the merits; unlike an arbitrator, the evaluator issues no binding decision.
