1. National Park Service
Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations
Interior Department bureau that manages the 63 national parks and more than 400 park units in all, including monuments, battlefields, seashores and historic sites. Its rangers handle visitor services, resource protection and law enforcement under the NPS Director.
Example: An NPS ranger reminded visitors to stay at least 25 yards from the bison.
The Organic Act of August 25, 1916 created the agency, although Yellowstone had become the first national park in 1872. Its founding mandate requires leaving parks "unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations". Rangers wear the distinctive flat hat, and the arrowhead logo marks every unit. National forests belong to a different agency, the USDA Forest Service.
2. Net Promoter Score
Business & Finance · Marketing & Advertising Abbreviations
Customer loyalty metric based on one question: how likely are you to recommend us to a friend or colleague, on a scale of 0 to 10? The score is the percentage of promoters (9 to 10) minus the percentage of detractors (0 to 6), ranging from -100 to +100.
Example: Our NPS rose to 48 after we fixed the onboarding problems.
Introduced by Fred Reichheld of Bain & Company in the 2003 Harvard Business Review article "The One Number You Need to Grow"; Net Promoter is a registered trademark. Scores of 7 to 8 are "passives" and count toward neither group. Academic studies dispute its claimed link to growth, but it remains widely used in boardrooms. The employee version is called eNPS.
3. National Pension System
Business & Finance · Personal Finance Abbreviations
Voluntary, defined contribution retirement scheme in India, regulated by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority, in which subscribers choose pension fund managers and asset mixes. Part of the corpus must be used to buy an annuity at retirement.
Example: Contributing to NPS gives me an extra deduction under Section 80CCD(1B).
Introduced in 2004 for new central government employees and opened to all citizens in 2009. In marketing and customer research, NPS instead means Net Promoter Score, so context makes clear which is meant.
