1. National Security Agency

Government & Politics · US Federal Agency Abbreviations

Defense Department intelligence agency responsible for signals intelligence, intercepting and analyzing foreign communications, and for securing US government communications and information systems. Headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland, it is led by a Director who has traditionally also commanded US Cyber Command.

Example: NSA analysts attributed the intrusion to a state-sponsored hacking group.

Created by a classified directive from President Truman in 1952, it was so rarely acknowledged that it was nicknamed "No Such Agency". Edward Snowden's 2013 disclosures revealed bulk collection programs and led to the USA FREEDOM Act of 2015. In US politics NSA also means the National Security Advisor.

2. No Surprises Act

Medical · Health Insurance Abbreviations

US federal law, effective January 1, 2022, protecting privately insured patients from surprise medical bills for emergency care, for non-emergency care by out-of-network clinicians at in-network facilities and for air ambulance services. In these situations patients pay only in-network cost sharing.

Example: Under the NSA, the out-of-network ER doctor can't balance bill me.

Part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2021. Payment disputes between providers and insurers go to an independent dispute resolution process rather than to the patient. The law also requires good faith estimates for uninsured and self-pay patients. Ground ambulances were left out and referred for further study.

3. National Security Advisor

Government & Politics · Political Abbreviations

Senior White House aide who heads the National Security Council staff, coordinates foreign and defense policy across agencies and advises the President directly. The post, formally Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs, does not require Senate confirmation.

Example: The NSA flew to Riyadh for talks on the ceasefire proposal.

The position dates to 1953 under President Eisenhower; Henry Kissinger and Condoleezza Rice held it before becoming Secretary of State, and in 2025 the Secretary of State also served as acting National Security Advisor. Because the National Security Agency uses the same letters, most outlets spell out the adviser's title, and AP spells it "adviser".
