NRC stands for U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, a US federal agency abbreviation.
Licenses and inspects civilian nuclear power plants, research reactors and uses of radioactive materials in medicine and industry, and regulates spent fuel storage. The independent agency is led by a five-member commission.
Example: NRC inspectors will review the plant's emergency diesel generators after the outage.
Usage notes
The Energy Reorganization Act of 1974 split the Atomic Energy Commission into the NRC and an agency later absorbed by the Department of Energy. The 1979 Three Mile Island accident led to major changes in its oversight. Military reactors and weapons are outside its jurisdiction. The same initials belong to the National Research Council of the National Academies.
