NIOSH stands for National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, a US federal agency abbreviation.

Federal research agency for preventing work-related injury and illness, part of the CDC. It studies workplace hazards, recommends exposure limits and certifies respirators; the familiar "N95" rating is a NIOSH classification.

Example: Only NIOSH-approved N95 respirators are acceptable for the asbestos abatement crew.

Usage notes

The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created both NIOSH and OSHA. OSHA writes and enforces binding rules within the Labor Department, while NIOSH, under HHS, does research and makes recommendations. Its Health Hazard Evaluation program lets employees request an investigation of their own workplace. Pronounced "NYE-osh".
