1. Oppositional defiant disorder

Medical · Mental Health & Psychiatry Abbreviations

Childhood disorder characterized by at least six months of angry or irritable mood, argumentative or defiant behavior toward authority figures, and vindictiveness, beyond what is typical for the child's age. Parent management training is the most effective treatment.

Example: ODD with daily defiance and tantrums at home and school, comorbid ADHD; start parent management training.

ODD frequently co-occurs with ADHD, anxiety and depression. Some children with ODD later develop conduct disorder, though most do not. Symptoms may appear only at home, with parents. Pronounced as letters. Medication is used mainly for coexisting conditions rather than ODD itself.

2. Orphan drug designation

Medical · Medical Research Abbreviations

FDA status for drugs intended to treat rare diseases, defined in the US as affecting fewer than 200,000 people. Designation provides incentives including tax credits for clinical trials, waived application fees and seven years of market exclusivity after approval.

Example: ODD granted for the gene therapy in a rare pediatric metabolic disorder.

Created by the Orphan Drug Act of 1983, which greatly increased the number of treatments for rare diseases. The European Union has its own orphan designation with ten years of market exclusivity. In psychiatry ODD means oppositional defiant disorder.

3. Optical disc drive

Technology & Computing · Computer Hardware Abbreviations

Drive that reads, and often writes, optical discs such as CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs using a laser. Desktops once had one or two built in; now they are mostly sold as external USB units.

Example: The new laptop has no ODD, so I bought a USB DVD writer to rip my old discs.

Laptops largely dropped optical drives in the early 2010s, beginning with ultrabooks and Apple's MacBook Air (2008). Drives come in tray-loading and slot-loading styles. Game consoles still offer disc drives, though "digital editions" of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X ship without them.
