OHRP stands for Office for Human Research Protections, a medical research abbreviation.

Office within the US Department of Health and Human Services that oversees the protection of human subjects in HHS-funded research, interprets the Common Rule, approves institutional assurances and investigates noncompliance. It also provides education and guidance to IRBs and investigators.

Example: OHRP determination letter cited inadequate informed consent at the site.

Usage notes

Established in 2000, replacing the Office for Protection from Research Risks at the National Institutes of Health. The FDA separately regulates research on drugs, biologics and devices under its own human subject rules, which largely parallel the Common Rule. OHRP maintains the registry of IRBs and Federalwide Assurances.
