MPD stands for Multiple personality disorder, a mental health & psychiatry abbreviation.
Former name, used in DSM-III from 1980, for the condition now called dissociative identity disorder. It described a person with two or more distinct personalities that alternately take control of behavior.
Example: Discharge summary from 1991 lists MPD; current diagnosis recorded as DID.
Usage notes
The American Psychiatric Association renamed it in 1994 to emphasize fragmentation of identity rather than the existence of many separate people. The 1973 book Sybil popularized the condition, though its accuracy was later questioned. The term persists in popular culture and older records.
