NIPT stands for Noninvasive prenatal testing, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Maternal blood test that analyzes cell-free DNA from the placenta to screen for fetal chromosomal conditions such as trisomies 21, 18 and 13, and often to report fetal sex. It can be done from about 10 weeks of pregnancy.

Example: NIPT low risk for trisomies 21, 18 and 13; fetal fraction 9 percent; patient declines sex disclosure.

Usage notes

Also called cell-free DNA (cfDNA) screening. Detection of Down syndrome exceeds 99 percent, but NIPT remains a screening test: positive results should be confirmed by CVS or amniocentesis before decisions are made. ACOG recommends offering it to all pregnant patients regardless of age. Clinical testing became available in the US in 2011.
