CategoriesMedical

MSAFP stands for Maternal serum alpha-fetoprotein, an obstetrics & gynecology abbreviation.

Blood test usually done between 15 and 22 weeks that measures AFP, a fetal protein, in the mother's blood. High levels suggest open neural tube defects such as spina bifida or abdominal wall defects, and low levels were used to flag chromosomal conditions.

Example: MSAFP 3.1 MoM; targeted ultrasound shows open lumbosacral spina bifida.

Usage notes

Results are reported as multiples of the median (MoM), and values above about 2.0–2.5 MoM are considered elevated. Incorrect dating, multiple pregnancy and fetal death also raise AFP. MSAFP is part of the quad screen with hCG, estriol and inhibin A. Detailed anatomy ultrasound has largely taken over neural tube defect detection.
