1. Motor vehicle collision
Medical · Emergency Medicine Abbreviations
Crash involving one or more motor vehicles, a leading mechanism of injury in emergency and trauma records. Notes add details such as speed, restraint use, airbag deployment and passenger position.
Example: Restrained driver, MVC at about 45 mph, + airbag, self-extricated, c/o neck pain.
Many clinicians prefer "collision" or "crash" to "accident" because most crashes are preventable. Mechanism details such as rollover, ejection or death in the same vehicle help decide trauma team activation under field triage guidelines. Seat belt sign on the abdomen suggests internal injury.
2. Model-view-controller
Technology & Computing · Programming Abbreviations
A software design pattern that separates an application into the model (data and business rules), the view (what users see) and the controller (handling input and coordinating the two). Ruby on Rails, ASP.NET MVC, Django and Laravel are built around variants of it.
Example: Put the validation in the model, not the controller, as our MVC guidelines say.
Introduced by Trygve Reenskaug while visiting Xerox PARC in 1979, for Smalltalk. Web frameworks interpret the roles differently from the original desktop design; Django calls its version MTV (model-template-view). Related patterns include model-view-presenter and MVVM.
3. Motor Vehicle Commission
Transportation & Travel · Driving Abbreviations
New Jersey state agency that licenses drivers and registers vehicles, created in 2003 to replace the old Division of Motor Vehicles after criticism of long waits and corruption.
Example: The NJ MVC agency in Edison had a line out the door the morning after the holiday.
New Jersey famously prohibits self-service gas, though that is regulated separately from the MVC. The MVC conducts vehicle safety and emissions inspections at state-run stations. Customers often call it simply "Motor Vehicles."
