MATLAB stands for Matrix Laboratory, a programming abbreviation.
A commercial numerical computing environment and programming language from MathWorks, widely used in engineering, signal processing, control systems and academic research. Its language treats the matrix as the basic data type.
Example: The lab's signal-filtering code is written in MATLAB, with Simulink models for the controller.
Usage notes
Created by Cleve Moler in the late 1970s so students could use matrix libraries without writing Fortran; MathWorks was founded in 1984 to sell it. Simulink, a companion product, models dynamic systems with block diagrams. GNU Octave is a largely compatible free alternative, and Python with NumPy competes for many uses.
