LLVM stands for LLVM (originally Low Level Virtual Machine), a programming abbreviation.
A collection of modular compiler and toolchain technologies that turn an intermediate representation into optimized machine code for many processors. Clang and the Swift and Rust compilers are built on it.
Example: The Rust compiler emits LLVM IR, which LLVM then optimizes for ARM and x86.
Usage notes
Started by Chris Lattner and Vikram Adve at the University of Illinois in 2000; Lattner later created Swift at Apple. The project dropped the original expansion because LLVM grew far beyond a virtual machine. It received the ACM Software System Award in 2012.
