Lisp stands for List processing, a programming abbreviation.
A family of programming languages built on nested lists and prefix notation with many parentheses, in which code and data share the same structure. Common Lisp, Scheme, Racket and Clojure are major dialects, and the Emacs editor is extended in Emacs Lisp.
Example: The editor's configuration is written in Emacs Lisp, so every setting is a function call.
Usage notes
Specified by John McCarthy at MIT in 1958, making it the second-oldest high-level language still in use after Fortran. Lisp pioneered garbage collection, conditional expressions and the read-eval-print loop, and it dominated early AI research. Originally written LISP in capitals; modern usage prefers "Lisp".
