JVM stands for Java Virtual Machine, a programming abbreviation.
The runtime engine that executes Java bytecode, giving Java its "write once, run anywhere" portability across operating systems. It manages memory with garbage collection and compiles frequently used code to native instructions. Kotlin, Scala, Clojure and Groovy also run on it.
Example: The service crashed with an out-of-memory error, so raise the JVM heap with -Xmx4g.
Usage notes
Introduced by Sun Microsystems with Java 1.0 in 1996 and defined by the Java Virtual Machine Specification. HotSpot, now part of OpenJDK, is the dominant implementation, while GraalVM adds ahead-of-time compilation to native executables. Tuning heap sizes and garbage collectors is a routine part of running Java services. Android uses its own ART runtime rather than a standard JVM.
