JIT
Stands forJust-in-time
CategoriesBusiness & Finance

JIT stands for Just-in-time, a logistics, supply chain & trade abbreviation also used in technology.

Production and inventory strategy in which materials arrive only as they are needed for production or sale, minimizing inventory and waste. It is a core part of lean manufacturing.

Example: The plant runs JIT, holding only two hours of seats on the line.

Usage notes

Developed at Toyota by Taiichi Ohno and others as part of the Toyota Production System, JIT spread worldwide in the 1980s. Disruptions such as the 2011 Japanese earthquake and the 2020 to 2022 pandemic-era chip shortages exposed its fragility, prompting some firms to hold more "just-in-case" inventory. Kanban cards are a classic JIT signaling tool.
