1. Hypertonic saline

Medical · Pharmacy Abbreviations

Sodium chloride solution more concentrated than normal saline, usually 3% (513 mEq/L of sodium) or 23.4%, used to treat severe symptomatic hyponatremia and to lower raised intracranial pressure. Nebulized 3% to 7% saline is used in cystic fibrosis and bronchiolitis.

Example: 3% HTS 150 mL IV over 10 minutes for seizing hyponatremic patient; recheck Na in 20 minutes.

Concentrated sodium chloride is on ISMP's list of high-alert medications, and 23.4% must be given only through a central line. Correcting chronic hyponatremia too quickly risks osmotic demyelination syndrome, so guidelines limit the rise to roughly 8 to 10 mEq/L in 24 hours.

2. Heights (Hts.)

Geography & Places · Geographic Feature Abbreviations

Appears in neighborhood and town names such as Brooklyn Hts., Washington Hts. and Cleveland Hts., originally marking high ground above a city or river.

Example: The apartment is in Jackson Hts., a short walk from the 74th Street station.

USPS uses HTS. In military history heights are strategic high ground, as in the Heights of Abraham at Quebec in 1759.

3. Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States

Business & Finance · Logistics, Supply Chain & Trade Abbreviations

Official US tariff schedule, maintained by the US International Trade Commission, that extends the six-digit Harmonized System to 10 digits and sets the duty rate for every imported product.

Example: At the 10-digit HTS level, cotton and synthetic socks carry different duty rates.

Importers are legally responsible for classifying goods correctly, and misclassification can result in back duties and penalties. Additional tariffs, such as Section 301 duties on Chinese goods, are applied through special HTS chapters. Also written HTSUS.
